Hello 2010 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Get Thy Bearings

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Classic from back in the day. I hadn’t heard this in a looooong while until I ran into the album again just a couple of days ago. This will forever remind me of Biz Markie and Finsta Bundy (Tape Kingz Records FTW).

Sommartid

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

I’ll be busy with festival business for the next week and doubt I’ll be able to post much of anything. Before I go I’ll leave you with one of this summer’s definitive records over here in Helsinki, as promised last week…
Sommartid (1981)
Uggla’s Swedish-sung disco pop jam was revived by Stockholm legend Mika Snickars a few summers back and finally arrived upon these shores this year… and now you can’t escape it. It’s pretty damn good still, definitely worth grabbing even for the non-Swedish speakers. Enjoy.

Top Ten List – July 2009

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Wow I’ve been slacking with the charts…but hey no excuses, let’s do it.

1. Downtown Party Network: Heart Break Dancing (preview)
New one by the Days Like These -guys and just as good.
2. Azari & III: Hungry For The Power (Myspace)
Much hyped vocal house tune from Toronto, out now on Cliché. Worth every bit of the hype.
3. Duck Sauce: The Motion
ANYway is good, The Motion is even better. Out on Fool’s Gold in August/September.
4. Holy Ghost!: I Will Come Back (DJ Mehdi Remix) (192VBR)
Pretty damn smooth. Someone please send me the white label that was out there for a second.
5. Helsinki 78-82: So Lifelike
Forthcoming on our Nightrunners label.
6. 6th Borough Project: Do It To The Max (YT)
Such a classy vibe.
7. Major Ernie: Pon De Girls Floor (320)
Bird Peterson’s simple Major Lazer / Ernie K Doe blend works.
8. DJ Tahara: S.O.U.R. Time
Killer Love To The World cut-up by one of the Ulticut Ups dudes.
9. Walter Jones: I’ll Keep On Loving You (Myspace)
Smooth DFA niceness from New Orleans producer.
10. Uggla: Sommartid (Youtube)
Old Swedish disco pop jam that’s having a big revival here this summer. Hold tight, I just might post it sometime soon.

Robert Palmer

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

So I’m in Tokyo and have a few off days between deejaying obligations. It’s the rainy season so I believe I’ll be staying in my hotel room a lot, working and possibly even blogging. Let’s see.
I just got back from Hiyoko Records in Shimokitazawa and their Compass Point section sent me on a crazy Robert Palmer YT spree. Dude had a knack for choosing songs to cover. Wikipedia has a cool story on how his version of You’re In My System came about:
“”You Are In My System” was an example of Palmer’s passion for R&B; covers. He jammed the song onto the Pride album after the other tracks were finished. Hearing the track in a Paris club, Palmer rushed back to his Bahamas hometown, where the reconvened band (co-composer David Frank of The System included) put together the number.”
Make sure to also check his version of Cherrelle’s I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On, a big hit in the early days of MTV.

No You Girls Instrumental

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

I’m kind of feeling The Juan MacLean’s whole style now. One Day is still going strong and most of the remixes have been real solid too. This is no exception. The acid line and the chopped up Apache go well together, but I can definitely live without the singer and therefore prefer the instrumental version.

Holy Ghost Loves Paris Remixomania

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
Phoenix: Lisztomania (Holy Ghost! Loves Paris Remixomania)
Holy Ghost! delivers once again but I could definitely use a dub version as well. Their new single ‘I Will Come Back” will be out on DFA next month, backed with DJ Mehdi and Classixx remixes. If there’s a copy floating around that I’ve missed please send me.

Btw, make sure to grab their solid edit of Hugh Masakela’s classic Don’t Go Lose It as well.
