Random 70’s Jams For The Holidays

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Yeah you guessed it, I’ve been ripping albums again. Here’s a few choice cuts.

Time Is Passing (1977)
Dedicated to all those who were heavy into the School Of Hard Knocks like I was

Wandering (1976)
Classic Jamaican soul sounds recorded in Miami, produced by the legendary King Sporty who went on to produce 80’s electronic masterpieces Haven’t Been Funked Enough and Get Down among other things

Mother Earth (1974)
Beautiful mellow song from the album best known for Jay-Z’s Friend Or Foe loop

Flower Dance (1976)
Tasty French library jam that was used repeatedly by Swedish producers back in the late 90’s

Give It Up (1975)
Bangin’ cover of the Kool & The Gang classic, only ever released in Sweden (and bootlegged in the UK later)

Evolution (1974)
Just a dope funk song with unintentionally funny lyrics

My name is John Doe and I’m wanted for murder

One for the DITC fans.
The Flaming Ember: Gotta Get Away (1971)

The Mikey Dread Show

Friday, August 28th, 2009

African Anthem is a pretty solid Channel One dub album all the way. But what really makes it special are Mikey’s skits. Actually, I’d say it’s the single greatest record for DJ vocal snippets, ever. It’s crazy how many times it’s been pillaged over the last 20 years or so, listen for yourself if you don’t believe me.

The above clip has all the skits from the album edited together in a single file, ready to be cuepointed as you like. Download from the Divshare logo and leave feedback if you find this useful!

A Taste Of Honey

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Rescue Me has been one up my favorite jams to cut up for as long as I can remember. It’s such a catchy groove and seems to always work. I’m playing records tonight and just pulled the doubles out again. For you I got a little intro edit I did back when I first got Serato 3 years ago.
Taste Of Honey: Rescue Me (Anonymous Quick Edit)

Everybody knows I Got A Man and That’s The Joint, the most famous joints to sample Rescue Me. Here’s another equally good one.

Love Is Alive

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

I always rated Alpha Omega as one of the cooler bootleg labels out there, if for nothing else but for putting many a classic on 12″ for the first time. This here is a prime example, just ask 3rd Bass.
Gary Wright: Love Is Alive (Alpha Omega Edit) (1975/2003)

BONUS:
Spooky Tooth: Waiting For The Wind (1969)
Another choice cut from the break collecting days. Wright got started as the front man for the band.

With 1 and a 1/2 Pair Of Pants You Ain’t Cool

Boogie Down Productions: Love’s Gonna Get’cha 1990
I always thought of this as one of Kris’ finest moments. The beat is by the one & only Joseph Longo aka Pal Joey, who also produced early-90’s BDP jams like Duck Down and Black Cop. Actually, I think I first remember his name from the Edutainment liner notes, way before I knew a thing about his house music career (producing timeless jams like Dance and Hot Music in addition to running his own Loop’D Loop label.)

BONUS:

Jocelyn Brown: Love’s Gonna Get You (8:38 Dance Mix) 1985
Another solid classic by one the biggest voices in disco, produced by Jellybean. Sadly most seem to only remember the samples taken from it. In addition to the BDP above the acapella provided hooks for Chill Rob G’s Power, Moby’s Go and Bizarre Inc’s I’m Gonna Get You. If some of you still want to take a stab at it leave feedback and I just might upload it.

Riding High

Thursday, May 7th, 2009
It’s 2:30am here, after watching Barca embarrass Chelsea 3 hours ago I went on a lengthy house wav buying spree. I should really be asleep by now, instead I sit here blasting age old classics like this.
Faze-O: Riding High (1977)

You Say You’re Looking For A Lover…

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
Get In Touch With Me (1983)
Classic jam, produced by The Whispers’ Nicholas Caldwell. I loved the bassline ever since I heard it sampled on Clark Kent’s remix of Chubb Rock’s Just The Two Of Us (DL).

Lovesick

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009
I loved Lovesick ever since I first heard Step In The Arena. I can still clearly remember the first time I heard the Delfonics jammy too. Blew my mind right there.
Gang Starr: Lovesick Extended Mix (1991)
BONUS:
Delfonics: Trying To Make A Fool Of Me (1970)

Temperature’s Rising

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Whoa I’ve been busy, mostly doing nothing more than playing records and just hangin out. Anyway…here’s an oldie I’ve been meaning to post for a while, but never got around to until someone just requested it. So here we go again.
This is the first original version of Temperature’s Rising that never made it to the regular 12″ (featuring two Q-Tip reworks) or The Infamous due to the sample not clearing.
Mobb Deep: Temperature’s Rising (Original Version)(1995)
BONUS:
Quincy Jones: Body Heat (1974)
